Tenuta Garetto
Legacy, Land, and the Spirit of Barbera

Following success in Barolo and after years of looking for the perfect spot, the Gagliardo family purchased the Tenuta Garetto estate in 2017. The origins of Gianni Gagliardo date back to 1847, when the Colla family first began working vineyards in the Langhe zone of Piedmont. In 1973 Gianni Gagliardo, son-in-law of Paolo Colla, took over the company. Today, the sixth generation of the family; Gianni's sons, Stefano, Alberto, and Paolo, are the guardians of both the Barolo and Barbera estates.

The Barbera region, located in Piedmont, northern Italy, is celebrated for wines with deep color, full body, low tannins and high acidity.

Tenuta Garetto has vines planted from as early as 1935 and is a very well-known and recognized spot for Barbera. The estate is located in Agliamo Terme, the heart of the Nizza DOCG and traditionally known as ‘the village of Barbera.

Nizza, described as the Barolo or Barbera, is characterized by strong and attractive wines with exceptional longevity. It is an extremely exclusive appellation defined by strict regulations and encompassing only 10 hectares of vineyard, of which Garetto controls 6.

In addition, the family invested in the Timorasso grape. A rare and ancient white variety from the Colli Tortonesi region of Piedmont, 85km from Barbera, which is recently seeing a rebirth with great investment in the region and new rules and regulations. Timorasso wines, also known as Derthona wines, are known for their ability to age well, and their rich, savory and mineral driven character. Timorasso is one of the most exciting white wine projects in Italy currently, with Tenuta Garetto at the forefront.
