Luminoso de Tío Pepe en la Puerta del Sol de Madrid

Tío Pepe neon sign lights up New Year’s Eve

Published on

On 31st December thousands of people will be bidding farewell to 2019 and welcoming 2020 at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol. The Tío Pepe neon sign will be there too, lighting up the city’s emblematic square from its lofty position atop No 11, Puerta del Sol, whilst the New Year’s Eve bells ring out. The “Andalusian sun” will bear witness to the start of the second new decade of the 21st century, providing one of the cityscape’s most classic snapshots on one of the most special nights of the year.

This iconic illuminated sign has been the crowning glory of the Puerta del Sol New Year’s Eve celebrations for over 60 years. It has recently had work done to rejuvenate it and lighten its structure. The 31st December celebrations will be the last of the current decade.

Brightening the night with its own light and from the spot it justly deserves, the famous Tío Pepe bottle, the most universal of all Finos, adorned with its little jacket, hat and guitar, will be the best possible companion to anyone seeing in the New Year at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol.
